The 1st Annual YMP Toronto Chapter Mine Tour

Cost: $200 - purchase here!

Included: Transportation to and from Toronto, breakfast and private accommodation.

Where: The Nickel Rim South Mine in Sudbury Ontario.  Nickel Rim South is a Nickel Mine located 20 minutes from downtown Sudbury.  It is the largest mine in Glencore’s Sudbury Integrated Nickel Operations, which began mining in the area under its predecessor Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd in 1929.  The mine is located in a 60km-wide geological formation in the Sudbury basin and primarily produces nickel and copper, with some gold, silver, platinum, palladium and cobalt also produced.

Ore was discovered at the site between 1100m and 1700m in 2001, with construction of Nickel Rim South starting in 2006, and operational at full capacity since October 2010. The mine produces about 1.25 million tonnes per year and the life of mine is expected to last until 2024.

The first 15 YMP members that sign up will be provided the rare opportunity of a mine tour, all the way down to the 1,400m level, with a follow-up tour at one of Glencore’s nearby smelter.

Update: Scott McLean will be joining us for dinner during the trip. Scott is credited with the co-discovery of the Nickel Rim South Mine, for which he received the PDAC Bill Denis, “Prospector of the Year” award in 2004.
